You may have noticed that Monday and today (Wednesday)'s comics were a little different than usual... most notably, the "To be Continued" at the bottom corner.  Also, the lack of actual specific jokes, and the slightly lower and less-adventurous quality artwork.  There is a reason for all of this... As some of you may know, I am participating in the 24-hour Comic competition on Saturday.  This Saturday, I will be telling one single ongoing story across 24 pages.  I can't tell you what all is going to happen (the rules say no detailed planning of the story ahead of time), but it's going to be awesome. Now, due to my work schedule (I work 3rd shift), I won't be starting mine until Saturday afternoon/evening... I'm shooting for somewhere in the 6pm EST range.  Since there's going to be a lot of comics going up in a relatively short period of time, I won't be Comicpress-posting all of them - instead, they're going to go on their own seperate page here [1] where you can watch the ongoing adventure and the results of this week's events as they happen.  Also, my friends and cohorts over at [i]nsignificant comics [2] may be hosting a blog-blog for this too, so we'll see.  If so, I'll have a link up for that shortly. Conventionality

Info

Published: October 10, 2008 | By admin

I miss good old fashioned conventions.  I used to be a conrat (when I wasn't being a mallrat) back in 'the day' (translation: I'm getting old), and I miss the thrill and joy of going to a convention... sitting in video rooms, walking the dealers room, going and hanging out in Artist's Alley and looking at all the other people who actually had talent... and Anime Hell, Midnight Madness, and all the other wacky late-night video programming they used to do in a desperate bid to keep people like me awake, since we hadn't actually paid for a hotel room or anything useful like that. What I REALLY need to do is to find a local convention that is... how can I put this delicately... small.  Like, tiny.  Small enough that I, humble webcomic artist with almost no fame or renound whatsoever might be considered a "guest" instead of a "crazy hobo who showed up and is talking about neon pink homosexual dinosaurs".  Something where I could have a panel on Webcomicking 101, and teach people that you don't have to be able to draw to be able to make comics, although it does help.  Some. So... consider this my resumè.  If you've got a convention, or know of a convention, that could use an embittered sarcastic webcomic artist (and it's hopefully within about 4 hours drive of Southwestern Ohio) then I'm your man.  What type of con?  I don't care.  Scifi, anime, gaming... hell, want me to come to a furry con?  I can draw furries.   I draw furries all the time.  For serious.

I've admitted before... I have a bit of a 4chan problem.  I've restricted myself to only going on Caturday mornings, and mostly to look at the aforementioned cats... sometimes to even contribute... but while I was there today, I ran across a classic that I had to share with the rest of the class. [caption id="attachment_230" align="alignright" width="150" caption="World War 2 : Special Edition"] [1] [/caption] There were a lot of essays that were posted, from an epic 6-page-long paper that was written on the pretense that Mark Twain wrote Lord of The Flies and that it has a "Special Edition" ending where nobody (almost nobody) dies and instead it breaks out into an orgy until the feds show up and v& everybody to a five page long piece of art on Oedipus - the guy punched holes on both sides of the paper, used different sizes and colors of paper, and constantly disclaimered himself using ( and ) to mark off statements as true, false, or "don't worry about it".   There was a clear-cut winner, however... reposted here for truth and justice.  Sometimes, a thing is just too special to let past, even if it is old.  The sheer genius of this kid, whoever he was, deserves to be honored and respected throughout the halls of Wiseass Hall of Fame. My Sprocket-Oriented Life

Info

Published: October 3, 2008 | By admin

My relationship with creator Jinxtigr started out a little rocky, I suspect, when I accused said poster of attacking others with a mighty "Wall-o-Text", a reference to the fact that this person does not appear to be capable of posting less than a few thousand words nearly every time they hit "Reply".  It's like... "Oh, here's a post from jinxtigr... PageDown, PageDown, PageDown, ah, there's the next post."  I didn't mean to be insulting, but I still suspect that my comment caused some ruffled fur.   Anyway, fast forward to now... I've been reviewed again, this time by Tally Road [1]'s author/artist, none other than jinxtigr.  And wow... again.  The review, true to form, is a mighty Wall-o-Text, but this time, it's all about me!  No, all kidding aside, he does a serious, thoughtful, and in-depth review of this webcomic, that just had Kai (not even my character) molesting a man in a coffee cup suit.  There's a discrepancy here... see if you can see it too. This review, much like the last, is highly complimentary, which I like.  Not entirely sure I'm deserving of this much praise, but they're the experts... er... sort of, anyway, and I'm not about to contradict them on how awesome I am.  That'd be rude.  My specific review is here [2], however I'd strongly recommend you also check out the comic and the other reviews to be found, as all are solid (if occasionally verbose) [1] http://www.tallyroad.com [2] http://www.tallyroad.com/tldr/Review-AppleOfDiscord.html

Bloody Review

Info

Published: September 30, 2008 | By admin

I've been a little hesitant to throw the AoD at too many 'review' sites out there, but when this very active and talented gent said he was going to start doing reviews, I was too tempted to not have a go at it, since he promised honest (albeit brutal) reviews and didn't seem to shy away from a challenge. I was expecting to do... eh... ok, I guess.  I didn't expect this: http://bloodybrutalreviews.blogspot.com/2008/09/apple-of-discord-nine-pints.html [1] [1] http://bloodybrutalreviews.blogspot.com/2008/09/apple-of-discord-nine-pints.html

Nightmare Fuel

Info

Published: September 21, 2008 | By admin

So... out of curiosity, I watched "The Fantastic Planet".  I'm a fan of weird animated movies, from Yellow Submarine to this bizarre cracked out Mother Goose-based movie that I watched when I was 10 and had a fever... but nothing compares to some of the stuff going on in The Fantastic Planet.  If you've never seen it, I strongly suggest you sit down one evening, right before going to sleep, and watch it. Then watch it again and again... in your nightmares.

Guest Comics for Off The Deep End

Info

Published: September 17, 2008 | By admin

I recently ran across a webcomicker who'd fallen on a fairly bad run of luck and was in need of help.  Even though she only had published a few comics before things started going ass-over-elbow for her, the few she did were impressive in both style and content, and she showed great promise that I didn't want to see go to waste.   I figure, there's enough really bad webcomics that are born and thrive without any good reason... so I'm not about to let a perfectly good one slip into that good night without a fight.  So... everybody swing by her comic, Off the Deep End [1] and check it out.  I've done some light guest work here [2], and will be doing some more as the weeks progress until she's back to full power.
