Help me Roll a new Character

Info

Published: January 21, 2009 | By admin

I'm a big fan of giving power to the people.  As the author of this webcomic, I do it mostly for you, those of you who've accidentally clicked on this blog post thinking it was a comic.  It's been a while since I've added a new character for keeps - I test-ran an AoD version of Jenny Everywhere during the "Apple of Chaos" storyarc, but much as I do like the idea of her character, outside of a story arc she's sort of... useless... for the normal gag-a-comic style that we maintain under normal circuimstances.  I've got a lot of characters in mind that I could potentially either create or promote from obscurity to the status of Main Character.  Too many, actually, for me to decide.   So... I'll tell you what I'm going to do: I'm going to let you, the readers, pick. The first round of voting (starting now) will be on some fairly standard character attributes: Sex, Allignment, Race, Class.  Voting on these will be open until January 31st.  After that round is completed, I'll write up bios and generate some "rough" designs of the new character, which you'll get to vote on again. I also admit this... like any real election, the poll is rigged.  You can vote every two hours.  Now, here's the awesome part, and why I'm calling it a Contest: One person will be chosen at random (method to be determined) to help name the newly created character and provide input on their debut comic. The new character will then be added to the AoD Cast Page (along with the winner's name and website) for all to see. Assuming the winner has their own webcomic, I'll take down the Project Wonderful tower ad for the entire month of March and donate that space to them.  (If they don't, they can pick who I do advertise there). So, with no further adieu... GO TO THE POLLS! [1] [1] http://www.theappleofdiscord.com/?page_id=520

New Gayzilla Vote Incentive

New Gayzilla Vote Incentive

Info

Published: January 19, 2009 | By admin

As some of you may know, I'm participating in OnyxSparrow's WAGON Webcomic Battle [1] card game.  The first of my cards, Gayzilla, is currently up in his card lab so that people can speculate on powers, abilities, and overall balance.  For the card, I drew some awesome high-res art of Gayzilla going to town. [caption id="attachment_514" align="alignright" width="150" caption="Not To "Scale""] [2][/caption] Of course, like Gayzilla himself, the artwork is much much larger than the card, and will be shrunk down to the size of a postage stamp upon actual card printing.  So... I've put the original image in all of it's neon pink glory up over on Frumph's site as a vote incentive. Just click here to see it. Operation: Superfly

Operation: Superfly

Info

I'm pregnant. ... Ok, I'm not pregnant.  But my wife is. I was holding off on sharing the news with anyone until we had firm confirmation that there was, in fact, a baby and that it was looking healthy.  Well, just got back from the hospital where we had an ultrasound done, and... [gallery link="file" columns="2" orderby="post_name"] I've got a sqiggle!  Yay! As to the post title, many years ago we were joking about what to call our future child... and taking a cue from Weird Al's "Albuquerque", I said that if we were going to have twins, we should totally name them Nathaniel and Superfly.  This lead to a long discussion about the merits and horrors of naming a child Superfly, complete with pointing out how the torturous children on the playground would be hard pressed to come up with anything that they could change the name Superfly to in order to torment said child, and some comparisons (both favorable and not) to the "A Boy Named Sue" song. So... ever since, and probably for some time to come (much to her parent's dismay), the baby is to be known as Superfly.

IntenseUpgrade

Info

Published: January 17, 2009 | By admin

In case you didn't notice, I've been moving a few things around here and there, trying to get rid of some of the "page clutter" I've accumulated since switching to Wordpress a few months back.  I've gotten rid of some of the more redundant features, like the "Most Recent Comics" widget or the "Most Popular Comics" thing... yes, i know everyone loves the bloody triangle. I've also made an important upgrade, if you will - I switched out WordPress's built in Comments system for something called IntenseDebate.  It should work, at it's most basic function, the same way the old WP comments did, but it allows some other neat functions like using OpenIDs, a points ranking system, support of a much cleaner threading system than WP's new threaded comments did... and I think it looks sorta looks better too. So, as usual, if it turns out I broke something, please let me know.  Otherwise, happy commenting.

Between Cameos

Info

Published: January 14, 2009 | By admin

Tiana (aka Metrius, aka She-Who-Sets-Main-Characters-On-Fire) has been littering her comics with cameos of late, and AoD was not immune to getting in on the fun.  For instance, look on the floor here [1]... it's good to see that, in that dimension, AoD has already made it to full-color publication.  And who is that wandering around [2] in the top frame here?  It's no wonder he gets into so much trouble... Vote for Calamaties!

Info

Published: January 8, 2009 | By admin

[1]Tony Prio (aka tprio), the guy behind Calamaties of Nature, has been nominated for the 2008 Weblog Award for Best Comic Strip.  His comic is fantastic, and his accompanying blog is very well written and full of useful information, not just about his comic but about comicking in general and life and stuff. He's up against some serious serious competition (Garfield Minus Garfield and XKCD appear to be killing everyone else right now) but I'd like to see him make a strong showing, even if it is a Jamacian Bobsled Team finish.  You can help by voting for him here [2] once every 24 hours per IP address... there's still a few days left, so hit it hard and often and let's try and get him up there. Have a _______ Solstice

Info

Published: December 21, 2008 | By admin

A few years ago, some pagan-leaning friends of mine and I were having an academic discussion about the merits of the various seasonal holidays and their comparative customs.  (This was before we got cable, obviously, otherwise we probably would've been watching Law and Order instead.) One thing about the various holidays has always bothered me... there's no really well established greeting for Solstice.  I mean, Christmas practically owns Merry.  Happy and Hanukkah go together well, because everybody likes alliteration.   (In all fairness, Happy's a bit of a greeting slut, though, because it still regularly attaches itself to Birthday and New Year, and even occasionally Christmas)  Kwanzaa, being the late comer to the game, was single for a long time before it hooked up with Joyous - and it seems to be working out for both of them fairly well.  Which leaves Solstice... still alone, after all these years.  Perhaps it's because Solstice is (arguably) the oldest... or maybe it's those who insist on calling it "Winter Solstice".  Then again, maybe it's because Solstice is just really hard to match up.  Happy (which tries to go with almost everything) sort of works, but Solstice's got a little too much self respect to be seen strutting around the season with Happy on it's arm.  Merry could never leave Christmas, and even if it did I doubt anybody would really believe they were together.  Joyous and Solstice just don't fit... they've both got that strong "ace/us" at the end when pronounced, so putting them together would be sort of like dating your cousin. Going outside the standard Holiday Greeting box, you've got some odd bedfellows as well.  Cheerful sounds nice, but by choosing it you also wind up dragging around Cheery, it's developmentally disabled sister.  Awesome is far too... masculine to be paired up with any holiday.  Radical is still holding out for Rosh Hashanah to notice it, and (let's face it) has been since the 80's. Which leads to my suggestion.  Bitchin'.  Granted, it's not a conventional greeting, but Solstice isn't a conventional Holiday either.  Bitchin' is probably considered a bit too powerful for a normal holiday greeting, but then again it might shore up and garner a little more respect for the oft-trod-upon Solstice.  Plus, the two of them just look... good together.  Bitchin' Solstace. Bitchin' Solstace.  See, isn't that nice?

Going Insane – The Movie Game

Info

Published: December 15, 2008 | By admin

Ok... I need your help, Appleateers, in finding this, because I fear I am losing my mind. Last year around this time, my DVR randomly recorded a very special, very bad, very funny movie for me...  it was a musical version of "Miracle on 34th Street", and it appeared that it was done in the late 60's-early 70's.  Now, here's the catch... according to both Wikipedia and IMDB, this movie does not, nor did it ever, actually exist.  They allude to the fact that there was a stage musical, and that there was a bad 70 remake, but there's no central connection that indicates that there was ever a film of the musical, or a film done as a musical, or anything of the like. Now, I suppose it's entirely possible that this movie was so bad (because, believe me, it was BAD) that there's some sort of secret society ala the people out there trying to destroy all copies of Shaq's rap album that has taken it on as their quest to smite every occurance of this movie... if so, just let me in on it fellows, and I'll stop asking questions.  Otherwise, any sort of help would be appreciated. Tell you what, I'll sweeten the deal - the first person to post a reply here with conclusive evidence that this movie ever existed gets to a) call a topic for a future comic, and b) have a character  sort of resembling their likeness added to a future comic.  Just post me a link, a picture, a youtube clip, a movie review... anything.
