Cell PhonesEvilHolidaysMarketing

I’ve been seeing a lot of commercials for getting people cellphones for Christmas.

To me, the cell phone is sort of a “personal” decision.  I know some people need help picking one out, but I would be unhappy if someone just arbitrarily decided something like that for me.  Maybe I’m crazy, but it worries me.

  • I agree with you! Who in their right mind would just buy someone a cell phone for Christmas? This idea also applies to cars. I don’t know why dealerships believe I’m just going to drop a couple thousand dollars on a car (plus lease, contracts, etc).

Guess what honey. I just spent our entire savings and got us a lease we’ll have to pay off for the next 5 years with out your permission. But you got this car you thought would be cool to have when we’re financially stable. You love me, don’t you?

  • If it weren’t a contract-based service (like almost all cell phones are in the US) it wouldn’t be so bad, but yeah – like the car, anything that requires the onus of continuation to be on the recipient should be on Santa’s “Naughty” list for gift giving.

  • Seriously… if there are things I need or could use, I buy them myself. Presents are for those things that would be great to have, but I can’t justify spending the money on them on a whim.
